Nvidia’s Next Big Bet: Inside the Talks to Buy Open-Source AI Lab Reflection AI

Nvidia's Next Big Bet: Inside the Talks to Buy Open-Source AI Lab Reflection AI

Nvidia, the world’s most valuable chipmaker, is in early talks to buy the artificial intelligence lab it already backs — a move that would deepen its push from selling the picks and shovels of the AI boom to owning the mines themselves. Related reading on our site.

    The Deal on the Table

According to the Financial Times, Nvidia is discussing several possible structures with Reflection AI: an outright acquisition, a bigger equity investment, a chip-supply arrangement, or an “acqui-hire” in which Nvidia hires the startup’s researchers and licenses its technology. The talks are preliminary and could still fall apart, but an agreement could come within weeks, as Reuters summarised.

The numbers involved are striking. Nvidia invested $800 million in Reflection in October 2025 as part of a $2 billion raise. By March 2026, the startup was valued at $25 billion — nearly triple its valuation in under a year. Reflection was founded in March 2024 by Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou, both veterans of Google DeepMind, and on October 5 it released Beam, a 501-billion-parameter open-weight model that the company says matches rivals on reasoning benchmarks while using far less computing power.

    Why Open-Weight Models Matter

Reflection’s pitch is geopolitical as much as technical: build frontier-grade open-weight AI models in the United States so the open-source lane is not ceded to Chinese labs like DeepSeek. Open-weight models publish their parameters for outside developers to use, offering near-cutting-edge performance at lower cost — a direct challenge to the closed models of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. The Trump administration has explicitly backed nurturing American open models to compete with China, giving Nvidia’s interest a policy tailwind.

The lab’s timing helps explain the urgency. On October 5, Reflection released Beam, a 501-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 23 billion active parameters, trained on 23.8 trillion tokens with a one-million-token context window. The company claims Beam matches rivals on reasoning benchmarks while using a fraction of the inference computing power, with full weights due under an Apache 2.0 licence later this month. If those efficiency claims hold up under independent scrutiny, Reflection would own one of the most capable open models in the Western world — precisely the asset Nvidia lacks.

    The Antitrust Dodge

The most revealing detail is the deal structure under discussion. An acqui-hire — hiring the team and licensing the tech rather than buying the company — has become Big Tech’s favourite way to capture AI talent while sidestepping lengthy regulatory reviews. Nvidia used the same playbook in December for its $20 billion effective acquisition of AI chip designer Groq, the largest deal in its history.

For business watchers, the lesson is clear: the AI industry’s scarcest resource is no longer just computing power but the researchers who know how to wield it — and the deal structures being invented to acquire them are reshaping M&A itself. Whether Reflection ends up inside Nvidia or simply deeper in its orbit, the message is the same: in the AI economy, talent is the asset, and incumbents will pay almost anything to lock it up, as Startup Fortune’s analysis notes.
