It is the most dramatic comeback in this year’s AI funding saga. Manus, the AI agent startup whose $2 billion-plus acquisition by Meta was killed by Beijing, has raised more than $500 million in fresh funding — reportedly at around double the price Meta had agreed to pay. From Blocked Deal to Mega-Round

Butterfly Effect, Manus’s parent company, completed the round on October 8, co-led by Boyu Capital and IDG Capital, with Tencent, HSG and ZhenFund participating, Reuters reported via Tech Xplore. It is the first raise since the founders and early investors bought the company back from Meta after China’s economic planning body ordered the deal unwound in April, tightening scrutiny of US investment in Chinese AI startups.

The numbers tell the story of a company that got stronger in exile. The Information reported Manus’s annualised revenue run rate had surged to about $500 million by June — up from roughly $100 million when Meta agreed to buy it. Media reports suggest the new round values the company at around $4 billion, double the acquisition price, making it China’s most valuable AI agent company.

What Manus Does — and Why It Matters

Manus builds general-purpose AI agents that autonomously carry out tasks like research and workflow automation with minimal human input. In September it launched a major update plus Cue, a standalone app that lets users create personal AI agents for everyday tasks such as booking restaurants — drawing inevitable comparisons with Meta’s own personal agent push.

The company is also forming teams to develop products for the domestic Chinese market and has explored a joint-venture structure that could pave the way for a Hong Kong listing, though that process is not expected to begin before 2027.

    The Agent Race Heats Up

Manus’s timing could hardly be better. AI agents — software that does not just answer questions but completes multi-step tasks — have become the hottest contested territory in tech. Meta is pushing its personal agent Muse as a revenue engine beyond advertising; OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are all racing to ship assistants that book, buy and organise on users’ behalf. Independent players like Manus are betting that focus beats platform breadth: a dedicated agent company can iterate faster and go deeper on workflows than a giant juggling a dozen priorities. With $500 million in fresh capital and a $500 million revenue run rate, Manus now has the resources to test that thesis at full speed.

    The Geopolitical Lesson for Business

Manus is now a case study in how geopolitics reprices technology assets. Beijing’s intervention — which reportedly included restricting two co-founders’ overseas travel — was meant to keep a strategic AI capability under national influence. The unintended consequence: a company worth $2 billion in December is worth $4 billion ten months later, with half a billion in fresh capital and a direct product rivalry with its former acquirer.

For executives and investors, the message is blunt: regulatory risk is now a first-order variable in tech deal-making, capable of doubling or destroying valuations overnight. Deal structures in sensitive sectors need Beijing — and Washington — modelled in from day one, not as an afterthought. As Pulse 2’s analysis notes, the agent economy’s biggest winners may increasingly be decided as much in government ministries as in product labs.
